you are at : [Learn with Digital cameras]

With digital photography the learning process is much faster because you can see what you have taken moments after you have taken it. This means you can see if you have got what you were trying to achieve and can shorten the whole learning process considerably.

I consider that there to be basically three types of digital cameras

1. a simple point and shoot, the sort have very little controls on them and for 80% of the photographs will we probably quite adequate.

2. A more complex types of camera, this has all the appearances of being a single lens reflex, but differs by having a small LED as the viewing eye piece, and a disadvantage with this is that you do not see the full sharpness of your lens through the resolution of the LED and when you move the camera fast the LED takes a while to catch up.

3. This is the single lens reflex that we are all familiar with the 35mm. If there is a difference between the digital and the film it is, at the moment, that for the majority of the cameras you need multiply the focal length of your lens by 1.6. This means a 100mm lens becomes a 160mm. The main problem becomes when you're trying to shoot with wide-angle when a 15mm becomes a 24mm.

I use a single digital lens reflex camera, a Canon D10 with about 6 1/2 million pixels. I do all my photography on the raw mode on the basis that I don't know which of my photos I may want larger.

I use 1GB memory cards and a carry a laptop with me so I can download and edit my photographs on a daily basis.

A carry two backup hard drives and a DVD portable burner, with this backing up system unreasonably protected from electronic loss.

As quite a lot to think about with the movement to digital photography and other lists a few of my thoughts on the following page
http://www.ivan.co.nz/Digital Tips.htm some of it is lighthearted but don't let that stop you from taking it seriously.

Incidentally if I cannot be bothered carrying a single lens reflex camera around with me I do have a small point-and-shoot similar to the type 1 above tucked in my shirt pocket which means I can have a camera with me all the time.
