On
12th September 2005 in the Aires d' service at Arromanches,
6 motorhomes including myself were broken into whilst
people slept at 0230hrs.
My
sister in the camper next door lost over £1000 in
euro's and sterling plus other objects from the cab, I
only heard them spring the cab door locks because of the
central locking system activating and was awake at the
very time.
Their
entry in each and every case was through the sevel cab
doors, the door locks fitted can be opened (not forced)
using a flat blade screwdriver.
Spend
your money on improving the security of the cab doors
first, if you own a Peugeot/fiat/renault or the like,
then always use a Fiammia strap across the door handles
or a piece of rope or chain.
You
do need a good and loud alarm fitted too, if you don't
go for a Van Blitz type alarm about £500, then the
Argus 'easyfit' alarm, voltage and vibration sensing will
warn if someone springs the central locks or taps the
van for around £25.
If
you are into some DIY, Argus and Focus sell the hard wired
house Micromark alarm for £39, the same one from
SAS costs £99. Although the Micromark alarm is for
house installation using a mains adaptor supplied, the
adaptor can be discarded and a 3.5 plug purchased to connect
direct to your leisure battery, the input voltage to the
alarm is marked at 9volts, checking the output voltage
of the 9volt adaptor revealed 13.8 volts, so supplying
the alarm with anything between 10.5 volts and 14.8volts
is okay.
The
micromark alarm uses reed switches (two or three are supplied
together with a PIR), extra reed switches are available
from Maplins about £2 each (two pieces), so all
doors and windows can be protected.
I
was really surprised just how easy it was to silently
break into the sevel cab.
