| Whenever
I look at a motorhome advert I am flummoxed by their letter
coding on
their numberplates and when they advertise a vehicle as
a "H" so what the hell does this mean so
after years of not quite knowing what this secret code ment
I spent about two hours doing research on the web for the
key. My they keep their secrets well, nowhere could I find
a table that gave me the answer without question so this
table is the best I can do, if it is wrong please let me
know....
I
could trace the UK car registration system back to 1903.
The Motor Car act which came into force On January 1st,
1904 the motor car act came into force and required all
vehicles in the United Kingdom to carry registration number
plates. County and Borough Councils were originally to
issue the registrations and number plates, this lasted
until 1974 at which time the Department of Transport then
took over by using specially equipped Vehicle Registration
Offices (VROs).
In
1983, the previous year letter suffix system ran out and
it was replaced with a year letter prefix system. This
system operated in the same format, but reversed (e.g.
A234UUV). The suffix and prefix letters I,O,Q,U and Z
have not been used. The year prefix system ran out with
the "Y" prefix on 31 August 2001.
